ECP Treatment (also known as EECP treatment) for Heart Patients
With the everyday increasing no. of hours spent just sitting and eating unhealthy food, no doubt heart diseases are on a rise. It is on the way to becoming the next epidemic in the country. As of 2015, it was reported that there are roughly 30 million heart patients and two lakh surgeries are being performed every year.
What disturbs the most is that with the changing lifestyle of the growing population, cardiovascular diseases are becoming difficult to manage. Moreover, inadequate facilities, inaccessibility and the different price options for the heart treatments also form some of the major challenges that heart patients face today.
Today, cardiac hospitals perform around 2 Lac open heart surgeries per year and this is one of the highest, worldwide. And this number is steadily rising. There are no of heart problems such as coronary artery disease, rheumatic heart disease, hypertensive heart disease, congestive heart failure, etc. Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is the category which is the most common among these categories. Out of all the 100 million heart patients in India suffering from heart disease, 98% of them suffer from this type of heart disease.
What is the reason?
The most common cause of this disease is heart blockage. Coronary artery disease occurs when there is a buildup of plaque inside the artery walls. Over time, this built up layer of plaque may partially block the artery and decrease blood flow through it.
If left unnoticed, this can lead to the formation of clot and that part of the heart muscle, which is devoid of the blood for long period of time, dies. It should be taken care of and in most of the cases, this elevates to a “heart attack”. It proves fatal in many of the cases.
Conventional Treatment Methods
Heart Bypass Surgery : This treats heart disease when your coronary arteries are blocked. A bypass surgery gives the blood a new pathway to the heart so that the blood flow can be maintained properly.
The above-mentioned treatments are costly and invasive. They hamper your daily life routine and often leaves you weak. Getting treated by the traditional methods give no sure guarantee that problems won’t persist. People have known to have issues after as little as 2-3 months of having surgery.
“ECP Treatment” which stands for External Counter Pulsation is non-invasive, device based treatment for people with heart diseases which works on the concept of blood flow. It is also called as “EECP treatment” and is based on the logic that instead of opening blockages, we can improve the blood flow in the heart muscles in the most natural way. By doing this, we felicitate the formation of new arteries that can act as “natural bypass” through which the blood can flow properly in the heart. This process is known as Angiogenesis and is very useful as it increases the regular supply of blood to the heart. This treatment, along with basic exercises and some lifestyle changes is very beneficial for the heart in the long run and enables us to avoid serious heart problems.
ECP Therapy – Procedure and Advantages
In this non-invasive treatment, large blood pressure like cuffs are wrapped around the patient’s legs.
These cuffs inflate and deflate in sync with the patient’s heartbeat. What this simply does is, it pushes the blood flowing towards the legs back towards the upper body. Thus, the circulation of the upper body increases, where most of the vital organs of the body lie. It not also increases the volume of blood flow but also the circulation thus distributing oxygen and vital nutrients in a larger amount to the heart, brain, eyes, pancreas etc.
In this same process, our heart also receives the blood which leads to the formation of new vessels often called collaterals. As “ECP treatment” (or EECP Treatment) helps to increase the regular flow to our heart, the chances of damage to our cardiovascular system due to our sedentary lifestyle is also reduced greatly.
Widely known as EECP treatment too, the procedure has also proved beneficial for the people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease. Moreover, problems and risk of diseases such as stroke, diabetes or other hearing disorders are also known to have reduced significantly in patients undergoing “ECP Therapy”.
